Creating a fine art photograph is a challenge, a wonder and a joy. When I first watched a black and white print come to life in the developer tray it was an instant thrill. That thrill is still with me today as I wait for my Epson printer to deliver my finished fine art print.
From black and white in the bathroom, to Cibachrome in a darkroom, to Lightjet prints from a professional lab, to creating prints at home, photography is an exciting adventure.
But for me the real joy and the real magic happens when I am out in the world, camera in hand, participating in the enterprise of life. The image is sometimes there and sometimes not, but when it comes together, when you merge with a quiet part of nature, turn the next bend in the trail or the next corner of an unknown city and connect with that place, join into that moment, then the magic truly happens. Down a rain drenched alley or up a flight of stairs, across a boggy wetland or a mountain pass, the joy is almost indescribable: that's why I take pictures!
Being a teacher for 30+ years has given me a wonderful opportunity to work with and enjoy young people. It has also enabled me to spend a generous amount of time traveling in the summer months. These travels have led me to Alaska, Canada, Mexico, Japan, China, Bhutan, India, Thailand, Malaysia, Australia, New Zealand, Fiji and back around to Ireland and Europe.
Out on the road, camera in hand, blending into a crowd, participating in the world and meeting its myriad people, my photographs are a natural response to being in a place and I hope you enjoy some of them.
All of my images prior to 2008 were captured using 35mm slide film and are printed on an Epson R2400 printer. I now use the Nikon D750.
